Gratitude

"Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."
-Marcel Proust

Have you ever had such an extreme feeling of gratefulness towards someone, so much gratitude, in fact, that you feel like you're overflowing, like something will burst forth from you, a song, a laugh, pure joy. In fact, you can't think how you could ever repay the kindness. This must be what Elizabeth Gilbert felt when she wrote, “In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it's wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.”

This evening, though with the normal desperate sadness that invades me every time I pack to leave my California life, I'm doing just that. This time I'm saying thank you. Big time. Thank you forever and sincerely. Yes,  thank you for as long as I have a voice. I'm so grateful for you. Gratitude. Simple and true.

Gran tiempo. Gracias por siempre y sinceramente. Sí, gracias mientras tengo voz. Estoy muy agradecida por ti. Gratitud. Simple y verdadera.

  1. Oh Mary, this spoke to me with tremendous volume--such beauty and depth, your soul has. May we all find that peace that lies within the moment of staggering gratitude. xo
