Los Libros

Book signing, Astorga, 2011
I think I'm going to love this!  Astorga, September 2011
Readers of books have an advantage over the ignorant.
Over those are the ones who remember what they've read.
Over those, are the ones who understand what they've read.
Over those, are the ones who put it to practice.
Is it really true about your book and your wife?  Astorga, September 2011
OK, so this is a total plug for my husband who is an excellent writer. He has written editorials, book reviews and presentations, city plans as the vice-mayor, and published his own works. He is most know for his book Pasión Leonesa, a book that details the life and often forgotten past of the Leonés people, those from one of the oldest kingdoms in Europe.

Another box of books to sell, September, 2011
This year he sold more books than ever at the Festival of the Banners. It couldn't have had anything to do with the fact that I mentioned to those who browsed the stand that it was first because of that book that I fell in love with him. I was enchanted with his writing, with his descriptions, anecdotes and love for the people with a tone intelligent and humble at the same time. I told them that it was because of this book that I was standing there as his wife. So, like hotcakes they sold and we had to go back into town to get more. That was fun, and more so because it was all true.
Crowd at the stand, Astorga,  September 2011

Pumpkin Spice Latte

When I was commiserating that there is no Starbucks in all of León (just imagine an area the size of Southern California) and in particular my withdrawals (and I'm not the only one) from pumpkin spice lattés, that's like no more mostos if you are Spanish and a mosto lover, I mentioned the fact on facebook. While most just laughed and said, "You're in Spain. I'm sure that makes up for it" (they must have seen my chocolate and churros pictures) a couple kind souls sent a home-made recipe of the same said delicious drink. Bless your hearts!

Sooo, today, on my own I decided to try the recipe out, ecstatic at considering the possibilities to further endear my husband to me, find myself befriended by new friends galore in my new Spanish town, and mostly to satisfy my own Californian palate when, low and behold. . .  to my dismay. . . I discovered that Spanish store do NOT stock canned pumpkin puree! They don't even know what it is! *gasp* And, good luck finding vanilla extract, especially the pure kind.

So, Santa's list from yo is getting long, really long. Now those suitcases lugged by dear Risa and Mark at Christmas coming to Astorga will have to contain pumpkin puree and pure vanilla as well. Wait! Christmas?! Now we have to think about Peppermint Lattés and Egg Nog and Gingerbread Lattés, and. . . .
Starbucks, Sacramento, CA,  August 2011
. . Sara can you just take your Starbucks Lear jet over with the fixings?!
Pumpkin Spice Lattes
                 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
                 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
                 2 tablespoons white sugar
                 1 cup milk
                 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 (1.5 fluid ounce) brewed espresso

Passing the Pumpkin

Thanksgiving
When living on the other side of the world an American must live Thanksgiving vicariously through the entries and posts of others. The spirit of gratitude is grounded in me nonetheless. Just as my family and I would pass the little orange pumpkin basket around the table, each taking out three kernels of corn and sharing his or her three biggest blessings, I've reflected on the gifts God has bestowed on me this year.

If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you,"that would suffice. - Meister Eckhart

I am thankful that all of my children are well and all four are going to be with each other, with cousins and family to celebrate the day. I love being in contact with them on an ongoing basis, especially on days like this one. I would like to be with them, because I miss them terribly, but they assure me and I believe that they are well and thriving. I'm very thankful, as well, for Christmas vacation and Easter break when we will hug each other and be together in person.

Kernel of Corn - Grano de Maíz 2
I am thankful for the kind and attentive Spanish husband with whom I am privileged to share the rest of my days. He writes. He loves reading me poetry, scripture, and excerpts from favorite reads. He likes to analyze films and books. All in my love-language, Spanish, which sounds like music since my early childhood days of bonding with my Mexican nanny. He makes me fresh squeezed orange juice in the mornings not to mention many delicious meals, photographs with me wherever we go and puts a heater under our feet on cold nights. He is enthusiastic about many things, but most of all, about being with me. I never imagined such a different and lovely life. I never imagined feeling so loved.
Nunca imaginé tan diferente y hermosa vida. Nunca imaginé sentir tanto amor.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. - John F. Kennedy

I am thankful for the new home we will have beginning next week. We will continue to live in the center of a Roman walled city that boasts a fabulous cathedral, a bishop's palace designed by Antonio Gaudí, a section of the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela where the remains of St. James are said to be buried, a wonderful museum and heritage of chocolate, balconies, tiled roofs, plazas and more. This place is eye candy and my camera is with me wherever I go.

So, what are your Kernels of Corn this year?  I hope you share them here.
Hoping you have a VERY BLESSED THANKSGIVING!

Coffee, Tea or Me

Sacramento, California, January 2011

Remembering with a smile. . .
we walked during my teacher's prep
to this cozy café to enjoy a chai tea and a latté
while talking of our plans and future together.

Recordándo con una sonrisa . . .

The Smallest Details

Astorga, Spain,  November 2011

There are those who think that what happens to a human being is the fruit of chance, fate, destiny. But, the believer accepts God's providence. Nothing escapes his sovereignty. Nothing happens outside of His control. Even the events that we don't understand, as unexpected and insignificant as they might be, have purpose in God's plan for our lives.
- Amaro Rodríguez García -
Condenado por Roma, Bendecido por Dios

I do love the Lord because he hears me,
he listens to my prayers.
he listens to me
every time I call to him.

Psalms/Salmos 116:1-2

Surely you don't disbelieve the prophecies, because you had a hand in bringing them about yourself? You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit?  You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!

Make a Wish

Astorga, León
One of the first things I saw when arriving to Astorga, These patio umbrellas in the café alongside the Cathedral made me smile.

Little John, my sister, Naomi and Stephen's son, was accepted as a recipient for the Make a Wish Foundation. Being a total clothes horse, he has chosen to go by limousine with a friend to dinner and on a shopping spree. He is elated with these plans before he has his next surgery to straighten his spinal column. God has blessed us so much with John these 13 years. Thanks for your prayers and love sent his way.

-4 huevos/eggs
-1/4 vaso de vino blanco/cup of white wine
-2 dientes de ajo/cloves of garlic
-harina/flour
--aceite y sal/oil and salt
-1 pizca de pimienta/pinch of pepper
-perejil/parsley

Poor Man’s Potatoes
From Grandmother’s Recipes - Peel the potatoes and cut them into rounds, like for a frittata, but a little thicker. Dip each potato round into flour and then into beaten egg and fry in plenty of hot oil. In the remaining oil throw in a spoonful of flour, chopped parsley, cut up/smashed garlic, white wine and water. Add the potatoes back in and let them cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
Amongst the things I’ve learned about my new husband is that he is not to be disturbed when he is in “chef mode”. When he’s in the kitchen, with the public radio discussing the issues of the day, with ingredients to his right and left and the cook books thrown open, it is best to not disturb him. Furthermore, it could be very dangerous trying steal a morsel from his pan or pot, even with the excuse of getting the utinsils to set the table. He scolds, ¡Quieta! ¡Fuera de aquí! And I protest, but smile secretly in anticipation of something wonderful to eat that I didn’t have to cook myself. What a treat!

Arrogancia

Astorga, León, 2011
Arrogance.
Central ingredient
Leaving a wake of pain and ruin.
Cruel words. Violence.
Confusion at good moments,
Fun with pain wrapped in looks.

Arrogance.
Much trying. Much Hoping.
Determination to embrace brokenness.
Trusting God. He can do all things.
Forgetting the sovereignty of Man's Will.
God given Choices.
Arrogance.
Years of Waiting.
Decisions made. Abandonment again.
So sacrifice Family.
Don't deal with Anger.

Arrogance.
Fumbled pieces,
Grieving and wondering at
This picture; past, present and future.
Arrogance.
There is no problem.
If and only if, then you're all it.
Get over it.
I'm the way I am.

Thank you Life Unexpectedly for The Murder of Magnificent
What was meant to be a spontaneous comment to you suddenly became a post.

Astorga, Spain, October, 2011.
There is a lovely house, a flat just across from ours. The second floor balconies, windows, doors and galleries are all being replaced. They, with their Baroque & Art Nouveau architecture represent a lovely time, but now are all damaged, rusted, broken. I've looked at them a lot and thought how sad it is that they can't be restored instead of torn down. The work is painful to watch. There are obviously personal parallels, but then rebuilding means taking a good look at what you have in front of you.

For Today's Veterans

Thinking of all of you Veterans on Veterans' Day:
Tahoe, CA, August 2011
I am so grateful to the millions of veterans who have served our country faithfully and sacrificially to ensure the preservation of our political and social freedoms. Because you served us, we are able to enjoy an even greater freedom. A freedom that, even today, many around the world are forbidden to enjoy - the freedom to worship our Creator.

In the service of your country you were called to do difficult things under stressful circumstances and you faithfully answered that call. Many of you were placed in situations where you were forced to make split-second decisions. You willingly and courageously stepped into harms way so that we could rest, work and play in relative safety. You risked your lives in ways none of us may ever know. Thank you for embracing the risk. Thank you for your faithful service to our country.

My prayer for you this weekend is...

"May the LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."
~Numbers 6:24-26

Abuela

Shops close early, there’s hastening in the brisk autumn air
talk of clothes, of next days’weather, flowers ordered to be picked up,
of travel, a nostalgic return to the small villages of ones' parents and grandparents.
Family. Home.
Grandma, I remembered you.
Familiar marbled tombs surveyed, loving hands in annual tradition
brush off dust, twigs, little branches, all that might litter the site or memory
wiped clean, a time of memories, these days and others.
Respect. Faithfulness.
Grandma, I remember you.
Wreaths and floral arrangements, richly dressing each resting place
quiet discussions, families and friends greet, kisses on the cheeks, occasional hugs, gathering with news about loved ones rarely seen, family reunion amidst tombstones.
Tradition. Peace.
Grandma, I remember you.
Walk to village church, filing in for mass to the ringing of tower bells
rustic wooden benches, incense, believers, a communion of the saints
liturgy sung, celebrating those here and those who have gone before.
Collective. Reverent.
Grandma, I remember you.
A candle burns for you, it’s light bright all day in my mind.
November, All Saints’ Day, November, today, your birthday. You left on my birthday, October. Because of you, so much of what I know and who I am.
Wisdom. Love.
Grandma, I remember you.
