Sombra and Toti

Hacía tiempo que no veía a mi amiga Toti, la de La nueva vida de Toti. 

Confieso que al principio yo tenía envidia de ella porque era más joven y yo la veía más guapa y más grande. En las primeras carreras que hicimos vi enseguida que era muy rápida y no tenía miedo a nada. Yo no me atrevía a darlo todo porque tenía miedo no me fuera a pasar otra vez como aquella en la que me choqué y estuve muy mal; me costó dolores y tiempo recuperarme. El miedo todavía me amenaza.
Pero mis papis me mostraron que podíamos ser amigas sin que ninguna perdiera sino que ambas ganásemos. Si nuestros papis eran amigos, también nosotras podíamos serlo.
Hoy estuvimos juntas en este "prau" en el que no tengo miedo a correr todo lo que dan mis piernas. Pero me sorprendí a mí misma corriendo tanto como Toti. ¡Qué gozada! ¡Estoy en forma! ¡Joven y guapa!


I haven't seen my friend Toti, from (La nueva vida de Toti) The New Life of Toti in a long time.
I confess that I was envious of her in the beginning because she is younger and bigger. On our first runs I saw immediately that she was really fast and unafraid of anything. I didn't dare give it my all because I was afraid of what happened to me the last time when I crashed and was really hurt; it took some time to recover. The fear still overcomes me sometimes.
But, my papis showed me that we can be friends without either one losing, but rather both winning. If our papis were friends, then we could be also.
Today we were together in this meadow where I'm not afraid to let my legs go as fast as they want. But, I surprised even myself that I could run as fast as Toti. What joy! I'm in shape! Young and beautiful! - Sombra

Los Galgos de Sendo

Sendo's Greyhounds
I'm a big fan of Sendo García. A true enamoured fan of his pencil sketches, perspective, both in still frames and ones filled with movement.
However, for as much as I admire his gift and for celebrated as he is, there's an important detail I can't forgive him for. It's his depiction greyhounds. While examining his work a the last exposition, "40 Years of Movement and Aggression," put on by The Town Hall of Astorga and Friends of Casa Panero, I was distressed to see the up close rendition of what I had most eagerly hoped to see, the greyhound in motion. I was terribly disappointed.

While all the greyhounds he sketched and painted were indeed, in thrilling motion, the exhilaration for anyone who has ever been with greyhounds suddenly fades as soon as one looks at the faces and teeth of Sendo's greyhounds. All of them are seen with fierce, cruel faces. Sendo's greyhounds are an ugly distortion of the true nature of the breed, even during the hunt.  It's not just a determination you see in their eyes, the joy of the chase, of the hunt, but the barred and sharp teeth of killers. The normal result is that any person, especially a child, visiting the exposition would sadly leave unjustly horrified by greyhounds, perhaps forever.

One who knows the breed knows that greyhounds are not like lions or other carnivorous animals who capture their prey in order to tear their flesh into shreds. On the contrary, greyhounds have been valued for thousands of years as a hunting dog because they simply catch their prey, never ripping or shredding it apart. They are by nature calm, with a gentle nature.

The truth is that greyhounds dazzle with their agility or ability to race and to outrun their prey. Then when they catch it they simply shake the hunted animal leaving it in prime condition, the meat unbruised and ready for the kitchen, perfect for any king's meal.

If you have never watched a greyhound run, there is nothing in the world comparable with the beauty and emotion of the experience. It's exhilaration in its purest form. Greyhounds run when they are happy and they enjoy when they run. And when they are still they are sweet.  Never do greyhounds show the ferocity or cruelty that Sendo's has drawn and painted.

Soy muy fan de Sendo García. Una fan enamorada de sus dibujos a lápiz y perspectivas, tanto imágenes fijas como las llenas de movimiento.
Sin embargo, por mucho que admiro su don y lo célebre que es, hay un detalle importante que no le puedo perdonar. Es su representación de los galgos. Mientras examinaba su trabajo en la última exposición "40 Años de Movimiento y Agresión", que promovió el Ayuntamiento de Astorga y Amigos de Casa Panero, me angustió mucho ver su interpretación de lo que llevaba tiempo con ganas de ver; el galgo en movimiento. Y me decepcionó mucho. 

Mientras todos los galgos por él dibujados o pintados estaban, de hecho, en movimiento emocionante, la euforia que siente cualquiera que haya estado entre galgos se desvanece tan pronto como mira la expresión de las caras y los dientes de los galgos de Sendo. Todos se ven con caras feroces y crueles. Los galgos de Sendo son una fea distorsión de la verdadera naturaleza de la raza, incluso durante la caza.  No se les ve sólo con la determinación que se notaría en sus ojos, la alegría de la caza, sino mostrando dientes afilados y babeantes de asesinos. El resultado normal sería que cualquier persona, especialmente un niño, que visitase la exposición se quedaría erróneamente horrorizada de los galgos, quizás para siempre. 

Los que los conocemos, sabemos que los galgos no son como hienas u otros animales carnívoros que capturan a sus presas con el fin de desgarrar su carne en pedazos. Por el contrario, los galgos se han valorado desde hace miles de años como un perro de caza porque simplemente atrapan a sus presas. Nunca las despedazan. Son animales por naturaleza tranquilos con un carácter manso.

Lo que sí es verdad, es que los galgos deslumbran con su agilidad y compiten para correr más rápido que la liebre. Luego, cuando la cogen simplemente agitan la presa dejándola en óptimas condiciones, sin magullar la carne, dejándola lista para la cocina, perfecta para la mesa del rey.

Si no lo has experimentado, no hay nada en el mundo, nada comparable con ver la belleza y alegría de ver correr a un galgo. Es euforia en su forma más pura. El galgo cuando está contento corre. Y cuando corre es feliz. Y cuando está sereno es dulce. En ningún momento tiene esa expresión de ferocidad y de crueldad con la que Sendo los ha dibujado.

Three Kings Day

Doesn't this look like an inviting way to end the holidays? People celebrate the days before Epiphany or Three Kings Day, by planning, shopping and eating out before the gifts arrive. What a great idea! The Kings, all three of them, had different plans for us, however.

Las personas, días antes de la Epifanía o Día de Los Reyes Magos, hacen planes, van de compras y salen a comer antes de llegar los regalos. ¡Qué idea más maravillosa! Los Reyes, sin embargo, los tres, tuvieron otros planes para nosotros.

It began with Ryan stating that we needed more beds for upcoming visits, including his. "You should get a bunk-bed" he said. And Enrique suggested, "Well, if so, why not make it a bunk to sleep three?"
After all, John F. Kennedy said,  "the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining," and the best time to get new beds is before guests arrive - my add, smiles.
Todo empezó cuando Ryan declaró que necesitábamos más camas para las próximas visitas, incluyendo la suya. "Debéis conseguir una litera," dijo, y Enrique sugirió  "bueno, si vamos a comprar una litera, porqué no una para tres?" Después de todo, "El mejor tiempo para reparar el tejado es cuando está soleado", dijo John F. Kennedy, y la mejor hora de conseguir nuevas camas es antes de llegar los huéspedes - añado yo, sonrisas. 

I began talking about an IKEA run when Enrique discovered LUFE (Local, Universal, Funcional y Ecológico.) LUFE is an environmental friendly on-line Spanish company that delivers; saving gas, mileage, and transport of goods; hence the trip to IKEA, more than an hour away was canceled, although I was sort of hankering for that beautiful drive through Picos de Europa to get there.
Empecé a hablar de ir corriendo a IKEA cuando Enrique descubrió LUFE (ve arriba). LUFE es una empresa española on-line dedicada al medioambiente que te lo sirve todo; ahorrándote gasolina, kilometraje y el transporte de la mercancía, así que se canceló el viaje a IKEA, más de una hora de viaje, aunque en cierto modo anhelaba ese paseo hermoso que hubiéramos hecho por los Picos de Europa.  

We put on our "can do" attitudes to get the job done, but we were soon in over our heads. Days of assembly and painting, including the night before last when I painted five hours, until 4:30am.  Serial to kept me company and entertained me through the night and early morning hours. Hooked!

There are 12 episodes, twelves weeks worth. I overdosed while painting and then some, listening to all of them in two days. Great listening.

Nos vestimos con actitudes de "sí, podemos" para terminar este proyecto, pero en muy poco vimos que estábamos con el agua al cuello. Días de montar y pintar, incluyendo la noche anterior cuando pinté unas cinco horas, hasta las 4:30 de la mañana. Afortunadamente, Serial (ve arriba) me hizo compañía y me entretuvo durante la noche y esas horas tempranas de la madrugada. Enganchada!

Hay 12 episodios, para durar 12 semanas. Tomé una sobredosis y los escuché todos en dos días! Un programa de radio buenísimo!

We worked while Sombra napped. That's what greyhounds do, all day; such a dog's life!
Still, we didn't forget to stop for the lunch hour, our big meal. There was even time to experiment with a new recipe, Chili & Peppers Tofu Burritos, and enjoy sobremesa long enough to beat Enrique this time at cards.
Trabajábamos mientras Sombra tomaba su siesta. Es lo que hacen los galgos, todo el día; ¡vaya "vida de perro"!
No obstante, no nos olvidamos de parar para la hora de comer. Había incluso tiempo para experimentar una nueva receta, Burritos  de Tofu con Chiles & Pimientos, y disfrutar la sobremesa suficiente para ganarle a Enrique jugando a las cartas.

Finally, gloves off, beds painted. Fresh cold morning air, right off the highlands together with sunshine rushed welcoming through the doors.
Por fin, guantes quitadas, camas pintadas. El aire de la mañana fría y fresca, directo de las tierras altas junto con la luz del sol se apresuraron a entrar por los balcones.

Sombra waited for her morning walk. See the look? It was to remind me that her romp with mom is always followed by café con leche, for mamá, and a tapa for Sombra.

This is past being a bad hair day photo, it's just plain bad, hahaha, including the extra 5 lbs. I've gained eating all the much leftover Christmas chocolate and turrón in the house, but who cares? It was our Epiphany this year. And, in the next days the resolutions will begin! 

Esto es más que una foto de un día de malos pelos, hahahaha! incluyendo tres kilos extra. He ganado todos los chocolates y turrones de la casa sobrantes de la Navidad. Pero, ¿qué más da? Fue nuestra fiesta de la Epifanía este año. Y en unos días empezaremos con los propósitos del nuevo año.

Sombra, Every Bit As Hot as Bodhi

Bueno, si el Top Model Bodhi Perro, lo puede lograr, también Sombra, no solamente porque es la Galga Más Guapa del Mundo, pero la Perra Más Guapa del Mundo. O, así le dice Enrique todos los días. Aquí la teneís con su nueva linea de bufandas y gorras de invierno. 

Well, if top dog model, Bodhi, can do it, so can Sombra because she's not only the most beautiful greyhound in the world, but the most beautiful dog in the world. Or so says Enrique everyday. Here is her new winter scarf and hat collection.

Every month the León Vegan Animal Sanctuary hosts a Vegan Brunch Benefit at the Café Rastrel in Salamanca.  This Sunday we reserved a table for the second shift, from 12-2pm.

 Estamos en Salamanca, en El Rastrel en un Brunch Vegano organizado a beneficio de León Vegano Animal Sanctuary.  Este domingo hemos hecho nuestra reserva para el segundo turno, de las 12 a 14h.
En esta ocasión y con un donativo de solo 10€, el menú es completo y maravilloso.  Todo ello acompañado de earl grey helado y leche vegetal casera, además de café de comercio justo e infusiones. Opciones para diabéticos, celíacos o alérgicos bajo petición.

This event asks for a simple donation of 10 euros, about 12$ and the menu (a series of dishes) is gourmet and filling. It includes iced earl grey tea and homemade oat milk, besides a choice of Fair Trade coffee and herbal tea with dessert. There are always options for diabetics, celiacs or those with allergies or special dietary needs.

Después, una magdalena de caramelo con una pequeña bandera en la parte superior que dice, 100% placer, 0% sufrimiento de los animales. ¡Qué pasada! Me encanta empezar una comida con un dulce y alegre convite!

Then we have a toffee cupcake with with a little flag on top that says, 100% Pleasure, 0% Animal Suffering.  How great is that!  I love starting a meal with a sweet and joyful treat! 

Luego hay rosti (un delicioso tipo de patata tardía) con puré de manzana espeso.

Next, there's rosti (a delicious type of potato latke) with chunky applesauce. 

Después de esto viene el plato indio, dhal hecho con lentejas rojas al albaricoque.
After that comes the Indian dish, dhal made with red lentils and apricots.

Esta hamburguesa de remolacha es con salsa tártara, una veganesa casera tan deliciosa como nutritiva. 

This veggie burger is made with beets. The vegannaise tartar sauce accompanying it is homemade and is as delicious as nutritious.

Enrique sostiene mi helado de frambuesa y plátano, así que puedo hacer una foto, pero no antes de que Sombra lo está oleando mucho. Por suerte para mí Enrique es rápido y ella no consigue lamerlo.

Enrique holds my raspberry banana ice-cream so I can take a picture, but not before Sombra gets a good sniff. Lucky for me Enrique is fast and she doesn't get a lick!

Es fácil hacer nuevos amigos en un lugar tan encantador como éste. Hay lugares cómodos para los visitantes por toda la Cafetería-Restaurante y sitios  donde poder leer.

It's easy to make new friends in a charming place like this. There are comfortable spots all around the Cafeteria-Restaurant for visiting and reading.

Empecé este libro, "¿Por qué amamos a los perros, comemos cerdos y nos vestimos con vacas?", cuando estaba con una de mis amigas del colegio, San Francisco Lisa, como Enrique y yo la llamamos cariñosamente, y leí un cuarto de él en su casa en inglés. Es una delicia poder retomarlo ahora y terminarlo en español. Su autora, Melanie Joy, explora el sistema invisible que da forma a nuestra percepción de la carne que comemos, por lo que amamos a algunos animales a los que llamamos mascotas, y comemos otros a los que llamamos comida, sin saber el por qué. Ella acuñó la palabra "Carnismo" para describir ese sistema de creencias que decide qué animales seleccionamos para consumo; Es una exploración de los mecanismos psicológicos y sociales complejos que conforman nuestra sociedad y su dieta de carne.

I started this book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows when I was with one of my oldest friends, San Francisco Lisa, as Enrique and I fondly call her, and read a quarter of it at her house in English. It's a delight to pick it up now and finish it in Spanish. Author Melanie Joy explores the invisible system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat, so that we love some animals we call pets and eat others we call food without knowing why. She coins the word "Carnism" to describe that belief system that decides which animals we select to consume; an exploration of complex psychological and social mechanisms that shape our society and its diet for meat.

Hechos como la industria cárnica gigantesca. Esta agroindustria animal es un sistema de producción a una escala tan enorme que mata solo en los EEUU a más de 10.000 millones de animales al año. Esto se hace de forma invisible, en mataderos lejos de todo, en condiciones horrorosos y donde se prohibe acceso a todos, incluyendo periodistas u otras personas que ha pedido permiso especial para entender el proceso. ¿No tenemos el derecho de saber algo de lo que llamamos comida y de lo que comimos?

Facts like the giant meat industry.  This animal industry is a sister of production at such an enormous scale that it butchers more than 10,000. million animals a year in the US. This is done invisibly, in slaughterhouses far from everything, in horrendous conditions and where access is prohibited to all, including news reporters or anyone else who has asked special permission to understand the process. We should after all know something about the food we eat, don't you think?
