El Tordito

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
and never stops at all.
-Emily Dickenson
Sacramento, California, January 2010
A little solitary thrush remained paralyzed and near death this afternoon on the neighbor's porch. They brought him over to me because he seemed so weak and with an injured wing. We wrapped him in a dryer warmed towel and put him in a cardboard box. Then we put him on a high and dark shelf in my armoire to rest while I silently prayed for him. Later he looked so much better and even cocked his head at me and tried to fly from my hand. We took him to the volunteer organizaion, WCA (Wildlife Care Association) that rescues injured, abandoned and endangered animals. Don't stop singing little thrush.

New Day

Hope & Health to Jamaica

This Friday, my_oldest_daughter leaves for Jamaica after months of preparing, getting the money together to get her ticket, and even more importantly, to help fund vacinations, bandages, and all types of medicines her team plans to take to the island. These provisions are destined for the people of remote Manchester Parish, located in the mountainous northwest of Jamaica. Maybe it seems strange to plan such a trip at this moment, when there's so much need in Haiti, but the trip has been planned for months by surgeons, general practitioners, dentists, nurses and a whole medical team, all volunteers to help the Jamaican community. It's normal for the people of this region to have to wait a week or two to see a nurse, and up to three months to get a chance to be seen by a doctor. Just imagine having to wait months for antibiotics, a surgery, or help with other serious problems. The most common problems include diabetes, hypertension, worms, ear and other infections, malnutrition, and all kinds of sicknesses that get worse without medical attention. Risa, with her hopes and plans of being a surgeon, is really looking forward to being part of this team. I am so thankful that she has a heart for the less fortunate. How I would like to go with her as well to give a little - Hope and Health to Jamaica.

Un Arco Amplio y Campos de Bendicion

"In my mind's eye, I picture Jabez standing before a massive gate recessed into a sky-high wall. Weighed down by the sorrow of his past and the dreariness of his present, he sees before him only impossibility - a future shut off. But raising his hands to heaven, he cries out, 'Father, oh, Father! Please bless me! And what I really mean is . . . bless me a lot!
And with the last words the transformation begins. He hears a tremendous crack. Then a groan. Then a rumble as the huge gate swings away from him in a wide arc. There, stretching to the horizon, are fields of blessings. And Jabez steps forward into another life."

Kissing the Sky

"So I Kiss the Sky Tonight
and pretend I'm by your side
and in the dark I'll feel the light
I'll be loved, I'll be loved, I'll be loved."

January 2010
These are the long winter nights
nights when one wishes to have
a loved one at her side to cuddle lovingly.
But, my sheets are cold and I can't get used to it.
"Esta Noche Besaré el Cielo
y imaginarme a tu lado
y en la oscuridad sentiré la luz
Seré amada, seré amada, seré amada."

A God Thing at Concordia University

Last week we went to our first STOA League Speech & Debate Tournament. I drove south (Irvine, CA) with the kids with feelings of guilt because I hadn't given my youngest son the necessary time to practice his speeches and prepare his boards for the competition.

In our hotel room he practices and practiced and I notices how much he had needed me and how much his speeches still lacked before they were ready for him to compete.

(here you can see that he also played a lot to "be at his best" he told me - it's true, we have to remember that we have to play a lot in life to have success - heehee.)
Listos?
Ready? Here he is with Danny and their Duo Interpretation of Wonka and the Glass Elevator.

Just imagine, then, my surprise when I found out that Mark had advanced to the next level! He continued to advance in three of his four speech categories for which he had prepared. In two he advanced to the final round!!!! So, with a tournament of more than 500 competitors he won seventh and eigth place at his first tournament.

Springfield, Oregon, January 2010

I had a really wonderful time in my brother's arms. Celebrating his daughter's wedding we took advantage of the time to dance and talk about so many things. In one moment we suddenly felt like time and distance had never passed between us two.

Keith and Megan

Springfield, Oregon, January 2010

Despite the grey skies and rain of January, the new year has started out with occasions of great happiness. First was the visit to the home of a dear friend who moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 2006. Last week was our first time together at her place, hence the "Happy Reunion." The following days were spent in preparationg for, and attending, my niece's wedding in Lowell, OR. She is the only daughter of my brother John. It was casual in a sense, and yet the perfect blend of personalities, habits, humor and elegance. Even family quirks were just a part of a colorful evening enjoyed by all.

"I don't know how you do what you do
I'm so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I'm amazed by you"

To Jody: Dos Gallinitas Viejas

Roseburg, Oregon, January 2010

I finally found
Where my Friend had moved
This bend around
to Fat Hen Farm.

Cheek to cheek
Happy tears rolled down
Our warm weathered hands
Clasped together now.

Come see this here
And come see that
We romped her grounds
'Til our mud boots then sat.

To tea, to talk
Once more, together
Just we two old hens
Birds of a feather.

El Anillo de Nuremburg

The Schöne Brunnen Fountain is the site of the famous gold ring of Nuremburg.
Agosto, 2008, Nuremburg, (Bavaria) Alemania
This ring is an architectural marvel, because it was formed part of the gate when the fountain was built about a thousand years ago. The solid gold ring is not segmented, is not broken, and is fully part of the iron gate. Even so, it is completely free inside the gate, allowing it to spin. It's a mystery how it was crafted, as it should have been a physical impossibility for it's time.
It is considered good luck to touch the ring and give it a full turn.
Nuremburg was such a beautiful, peaceful city to visit. It was almost difficult to believe that it had been Hitler's headquarters and even before that the place of Jewish massacre and hardship. Now the city is fervently commited to personal and civic freedoms. Now they have peace conferences and honor friendship and love between all people as a result of what they have learned through their painful past. This speaks to me on a personal level. I wish that out of the pain we're living will come an honoring of love, respect and dignity. Here's for the turning of the Ring!
