Piedralba

For many years I daydreamed about being a proprietor of a Bed and Breakfast. I could imagine living in an idyllic setting where my responsibilities would be to provide a beautiful and tranquil environment, serve specialties, especially breakfast dishes and baked goods, and in general find ways to make guests smile and feel at home. Well, not exactly at home, because the the whole idea is to "get away," but comfortably where they would feel peaceful and refreshed.

So you can just imagine how thrilled I was when Enrique told me that he, together with some partners had a property they had bought with just that idea in mind! We went out to visit the Casa Rural in Pieldralba which was under construction when the project was abandoned and so scaffolding and tools are still there as if the workers had left just yesterday.  Life happened. Two divorces and a newfound job left their hopes and ambitions for the old house buried under layers of dust. While Enrique shook his head at a dream thwarted and at a standstill, I marvelled at the absolute silence and peace of the place.

Sparrows, swallows and other birds happily swoop in and out searching for a meal of abundant lizards and other little creatures that are so present in rural settings. The best of country, just outside the bustling pilgrimage city of Astorga.

A family of majestic white barn owls live in the inner doorway.

This house belonged to an illegitimate son of the Marquis.  He became very rich, and when he died without descendants, a foundation was created for the education and betterment of the residents of Piedralba, administered by the City. This house was sold to Enrique and his friends because they presented a proposal for Rural House of Tourism that included a Cultural Center. Circumstances beyond his control forced them to stop the project from their initial intention and now they are now ready to pass the dream to someone else who can develop something inspiring here, aimed at the training and improvement of the people.

The home is made of the typical materials and with the same architecture as the famed Maragata houses of the area. They are made from stone and clay and have walls that surround the courtyard and interior buildings. It has details such as the candonga, a chimney that is now rarely seen, only in photographs and restored places in this zone.

We pulled up chairs onto the balcony that first visit and sat silently. The river, just past the giant wooden Maragata door at the front, rippled a laughing sound. A stillness filled my senses and I remembered that former dream, but now with a new thought altogether.
What if this place could become a retreat center, a place for prayer and meditation, for spiritual learning and for rest? This idea has continued to fill my mind since the Estate is up for sale. I wonder if someone might want to do the same thing we do? Maybe some dreams come true, like a retreat home in Piedralba.

  1. Oh my dear friend Mary, I am crying with joy and happiness....

What a lovely man Enrique is. To be able to help bring your dreams into reality and support you in such grand ways.
    Que maravilla....Hermosa....

I pray all will go well with your reforms of the old place. Barn owl family already in residence, what more blessings does it need???
Your wisdom too has paid off.
It sounds Idilic and the layout looks expansive.

Let me know when you'll be ready for your first guests, I'd love to be amongst them. And if you need anything, just say and I'll try to forward this to you.
I was planning to come back to the Camino May/June 2014 anyway.

Love and light to all in Astorga.

    Peaceful Warrior

    1. Oh dear Warrior,
I only wish it were true. The place is still for sale, and though we are part owners we don't have a chance to make the reforms unless another decided to buy the partners share and work with us to make it happen. Still, it's such a peaceful beautiful spot and dream.
Looking forward to meeting you here on your next Camino.
Love from inside the Roman Wall, Astorga.
