What About Ferdinand?

Once upon  a time in Spain...

Translation:  "Then they spear you, then you nailed some flags into you, then they stab a sword into you, stab you again, and before you die they cut off your tail, ears and testicles.

Just today I was told that the parts cut off are like a trophy and that none are cut off until the bull dies. Moreover, it's usually just the bull's ears and tail. I think the person was wanting to convince me that it's a less cruel tradition than I imagined. Really? Regardless, bulls and cows are taunted and treated cruelly to make them mean and to look like the kind of animal that could give a fair fight. Did you know that it is Hemingway's writings and foreign tourism that have kept the practice alive? Hemingway wrote in The Sun Also Rises, "Nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bull-fighters" and "there are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”

Hoy mismo me dijo una persona que las partes que se le corta al toro son como un trofeo y que a ninguno hasta de que esté muerto. Además, normalmente solo son las orejas y el rabo. Creo que esta persona quería  convencerme que esta tradición es mucho menos cruel de como la había imaginado. ¿De verdad? De todas formas a los toros y vacas se los provocan y los tratan cruelmente para que aparezcan feroces y se los vean como el tipo de animal que podría dar una pelea justa. ¿Sabías que  han sido la lectura de Hemingway y el turismo extranjero lo que ha mantenido la práctica viva? Hemingway escribió en, The Sun Also Rises, "nadie vive por completo su vida, salvo los toreros" y "sólo hay tres deportes: las corridas de toros, carreras de coches, y el montañismo, todo lo demás no son más que juegos."

Nonetheless, most Spaniards are against Bullfighting, like those seen in this video with the activist group called Break a Spear in a similar event.
Sin embargo, la mayoría de los españoles están en contra de los Toros, como los que se ve en este video después de un evento similar con el grupo Rompe una Lanza.

Pero al toro nadie le ha preguntado si quiere estar ahí.

En lugar de renunciar a la tradición por completo, no podía España a adoptar una corrida de toros para turistas y tradicionalistas por igual, donde el toro se saliera ileso, aunque, manteniendo la misma pasión, intensidad y ceremonia? Mis hijos vieron una corrida de toros portuguesa memorable, como las de las comunidades portuguesas de la Merced y de Manteca, en California, donde se conservan los Pasos o etapas, pero el toro no sufre derramamiento de sangre ni muerte. Les encantó y hablamos de ello durante años. ¡Eso sí que es deporte!

Rather than foregoing tradition altogether, couldn't Spain to adopt a bull fight for the tourists and traditionalists alike, where the bull is left unharmed, yet maintain the same passion, intensity and ceremony? My children saw a memorable Portuguese bull fight like those in the Portuguese communities such as Merced and Manteca, California, where the pasos, or steps were preserved, but the bull spared bloodshed and death. They loved and talked about it for years Now, that's sport!



Better yet, this scene- Fadjen et Moi, that reminds me so much of the favorite children's tale, The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf.
Y aun mejor, esta escena pacífic - Fadjen et Moi, que me recuerda tanto del cuento infantil, Ferdinand por Munro Leaf.
