We Three Kings Arrive to Astorga

Tonight the Magi, the Three Kings came to town! Lines of children with their families waited to go to see them in person, and whisper their greatest wishes in their ears.

In Spain, Christmas festivities don't end until Epiphany, or Day of the Three Kings, January 6th, who according to the Biblical account brought gifts to the Christ Child. It's the highlight of the Christmas holiday, for the children, at least, 

¡Esta noche los Magos, los Reyes pasaron por Astorga! Una colas largas de niños con sus familias esperaban verlos en persona para que los niños pudieran susurran sus mayores deseos en sus oídos.

En España, los días de las fiestas navideñas no terminan hasta la Epifanía o Día de los Reyes Magos, el 6 de enero, quienes según el relato bíblico llevaron regalos al Niño Jesús.

The Christmas season and decorations begin with the Nativity. There is no squabble about Nativity scenes being placed in public places. Just the opposite, in fact. You see different Nativity scenes in every storefront, parks, the town hall and as the center piece in every home, but minus baby Jesus in the manger, of course. Then, magically, on December 25th baby Jesus appears in all of the mangers throughout the land.  

La estación navideña y las decoraciones empiezan con el Natividad. No hay ninguna discusión acerca de colocar belenes en lugares públicos. Todo lo contrario, se pueden ver diferentes escenas de la Natividad en cada tienda, en los parques, en el ayuntamiento y como el elemento central en cada hogar. Luego, el 25 de diciembre el Niño Jesús aparece en todos los pesebres de todo el país.  

So, instead of a letter to Santa at the North Pole, little children deposit their wish list to the Three Kings. Here is the town's official mail box for the Three Kings.

 En lugar de una carta a Santa Claus en el Polo Norte, los niños pequeños envían su lista de deseos a los Reyes Magos. Aquí, en el Ayuntamiento, está el buzón de correos oficial para las cartas a los Reyes Magos.

In the States folks are now taking down the lights and trees, packing up their decorations with a sigh and putting everything away for another year. 

Here, however, the Three Kings will pass through town tonight on their camels with gifts for all who have been good this year. 

Over two thousand years ago they followed a star and travelled to worship Christ, newly born in a manger, with myrhh, incense and gold. Now, they venture here to leave presents in the childrens' shoes rather than their stockings. It;s rumored that if  the children have misbehaved they will find a lump of coal instead -  *hint* -  black rock candy "coal" can be found in the grocery stores that comes in a burlap bag tied with ribbon and marked COAL, but fortunately, all the children are very good, and the Kings very benevolent and they always leave something wonderful for the children. 

It's a beautiful tradition and the morning of the Three Kings begins with the "roscón" for breakfast, making everyone feel like a king, especially he who finds the little figurine tucked inside the pastry and gets to wear the crown. 

 En los Estados Unidos la gente está quitando las luces y los árboles, recogiendo sus decoraciones con un suspiro y guardándolo por un año más. Pero en España lo más destacado de las vacaciones de Navidad, para los niños, por lo menos, acaba de llegar. Esta noche los Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar, vendrán a través de la ciudad en sus camellos con regalos para dar a todos los que han sido buenos este año. Viajaron hace un poco más de dos mil años para adorar a Jesús, recién nacido en un pesebre, y le ofrecieron mirra, incienso y oro. Ahora, se aventuran aquí para dejar los regalos en los zapatos de los niños "en lugar de en los calcetines”. Si no han sido muy buenos, los niños encontrarán un trozo de "carbón" -  *¡ojo!*  - existen unas rocas negras de caramelo en las tiendas de comestibles que viene en una bolsa de arpillera atado con cinta y etiquetado como CARBÓN, pero afortunadamente, los niños son muy buenos, por lo menos el día de hoy y los Reyes son muy benévolos y siempre dejan algo bueno para los niños. Es una tradición realmente preciosa y empezando el día con el roscón del desayuno todos se sienten reyes, especialmente él que encuentra la figurina del premio dentro y se lleva la corona.
