The hanging houses of Cuenca (La Mancha) weren't the only thing to catch our eye this day on our way home from a wedding in Alicante.

A glamorous balcony in Madrid waved a solemn good-bye to our Ryan who visited us the month of July and to Sara, who headed back to California after her six month stay, but a cheery hello to Risa who has now come for a month.

Un glamoroso balcón en Madrid hizo un solemne gesto de adiós a nuestro Ryan que nos visitó el mes de julio con Sara que regresó a California después de su estancia de seis meses, pero fue un alegre saludo a Risa quien ha llegado para un mes.

Resting in Peace

On her 86th birthday last October. She always dressed so elegantly. Graceful and lovely at every step.
I gave her this necklace and earrings after my last California visit.
She wore them often and looked beautiful.

Ryan only has two more days here and Sara seven. We are ending our visit with a difficult family time of mourning for Mamá Tinia, my sweet mother-in-law, who passed on to be with our Lord on Tuesday July 31st.

Easter Sunday meal at our home 

Mamá liked being at our home, but the stairs and long visits were tiring.
She discovered the red rockers downstairs were a great place for an afternoon nap.
I can still see her covered up in the soft white blanket she liked so well. 

Yesterday and all this morning is the wake, dozens (feels like hundreds) of family and friends coming through the elegant funeral home to view, share condolences, sit.
In the early evening we will have mass in her small home village and the burial. She is at rest. We remember her well with honor and love.

I am going to miss her much, miss her "like a cathedral."

Romería de Castrotierra

A Romería in Spain is a religious pilgrimage or spring excursion.  Our trip was a celebration that Enrique and I began in Astorga with the guys from the residency at eight in the morning after seeing the float of the Virgen of Castrotierra pass by under our kitchen balcony with throngs of people parading in front and behind.

Una Romería en España es una peregrinación o una fiesta popular en el campo en el entorno de alguna ermita o santuario. Nuestro viaje fue una celebración que Enrique y yo comenzamos en Astorga con los chicos de la residencia a las ocho de la mañana después de ver el paso de la Virgen de Castrotierra por debajo de nuestro balcón de la cocina con multitud de personas desfilando delante y detrás.

The word originally comes from "romero", meaning those who travel towards Rome. 

La palabra "romería" proviene originalmente de "romero", es decir, aquellos que peregrinan en dirección a Roma.

It is a Catholic excursion that can be done by car, floats, on horseback or on foot and it ends at a hermitage like the one we traveled to in Castrotierra.

Es una excursión católica que se puede hacer en coche, a caballo o a pie y termina en una ermita como la de Castrotierra

We walked five or more hours to arrive and enjoyed our meal together there before returning home.

Caminamos cinco o más horas para llegar y disfrutamos de nuestra comida juntos, antes de regresar a casa.

One person plays the drum and fife both. Others keep beat with castanets. Songs are sung along the way.

Una misma persona toca el tambor y la flauta. Otros mantienen ritmo con castañuelas. Hay canciones todo el camino.

There is a cheerful and adventurous attitude among the crowds.
Hay una actitud alegre y aventurera entre el gentío.

I thought it was interesting that more than one "Virgen" was brought along to greet each other at the hermitage.
Pensé que era interesante que más de una "Virgen" llegaran a saludarse en la ermita.

People picnicked or found restaurants where they could share meals once we arrived to Castrotierra.

La gente almorzó en el campo o encontró restaurantes donde compartir las comidas una vez que llegamos a Castrotierra.

New classes begin today. The excitement of teaching English to a new group of students fills the air. Why did I stay up so late thinking about it? Now I'm a zombie, hahaha. Really, I can't wait!

Las nuevas clases empiezan hoy. La emoción enorme de empezar el inglés con un grupo nuevo llena el ambiente. ¿Por qué me desvelé la noche pensando en ello? Ahora soy una sonámbula, jajaja.  De verdad, no puedo esperar!
