What's does a Fish have to do with the separatist movement in Catalonia? Well, it's a fairy tale about a magical fish and a Catalonian government that every time wants more and more from Spain. While the outcome surely won't be the same, the demands and expectations of Spain's most prosperous province sound much too similar. First, you'll have to have read the Grimm Brother's Tale of The Fisherman and his Wife to understand what I'm going to write next.¿Qué tiene que ver el Pez de la fábula con el movimiento separatista de Cataluña? Bueno, hay un cuento de hadas sobre un pez mágico que concede deseos y alguien que siempre quiere más, como el gobierno de Cataluña respecto de España. Si bien el resultado seguramente no será el mismo, las exigencias y expectativas de la región más próspera de España son muy similares. Primero, tendrás que haber leído el Cuento de Grimm "El Pescador y su Esposa" para entender lo que voy a escribir a continuación.
You can read it here. Either way, you will see that this story is very valuable to many applications and one that I often mentioned to my children when they were growing up. I'd say, "Too much said the fish," and they knew exactly what I meant. Take a moment and read or reread the tale and you'll discover a poor old fisherman and his wife, who live an impoverished life of daily toil and with meager means. One day while out fishing on the sea the old man pulls up a magic fish who agrees to grant the old man a wish if he lets him go. But, instead of remaining content with their good fortune, the fisherman returns repeatedly at his wife's prompting to ask the magic fish for more and more and more, until the request becomes so outlandish that any reasonable reader, child and adult alike, shakes their head at the absurdity of wanting so much. What the fisherman's wife finally gets in the end as a result of her insatiable craving to have more is that the magic fish finally says to them, "Too much! and they find themselves back in their original situation.
Usted puede leerlo aquí. De cualquier manera, verá que esta historia es muy valiosa para muchas aplicaciones, yo se lo he mencionado a mis hijos mucho cuando estaban creciendo. Yo les decía, "Demasiado, dijo el pez", y sabían exactamente lo que quería decir. Tómese un momento y lea o relea la historia y descubrirá a un pobre viejo pescador y a su esposa, que vivían una vida empobrecida de trabajo cotidiano y con medios escasos. Un día, mientras pescaba en el mar, el viejo sacó un pez mágico que le ofreció concederle un deseo si lo dejaba ir. Lo que consigue la esposa del pescador con su ansia insaciable es que el pez mágico finalmente les dijera: "¡esto es demasiado!" y les devolviera entonces a su estado original.
Aunque no puedo saber cómo podría sentirse el separatista catalán sobre esta comparación, desde el punto de vista de un extraño, Cataluña exhibe el mismo síndrome de niño mimado que la esposa del pescador. Y al igual que en la historia, un final feliz para la arrogancia continua de Cataluña parece poco probable.
What the rest of the world outside of Spain doesn't realize, and what the press doesn't make clear is that the terrible and highly publicized and photographed conflict on October 1st was constitutionally illegal. Spain is a decentralized democratic country, and has had a constitution comparable to the most advanced and democratic countries in the world for the last 40 years. It was approved by a landslide referendum Dec. 6, 1978 by the entire nation. Catalonia, one of 17 autonomous communities, has all of its voting rights, proof being that it's already voted six times in the last five years. This "vote," however, on October 1, 2017, was a strategic move to declare unilateral independence from the rest of Spain. There was also another former illegal referendum, on November 9, 2014, which wasn't suppressed. Not then, nor ever, in any election, legal or illegal, have the Catalonian separatists had the majority vote.
Lo que el resto del mundo fuera de España puede no darse cuenta, y lo que la prensa internacional no deja claro, es que el terrible y altamente divulgado y fotografiado referéndum del 1 de octubre fue constitucionalmente ilegal. España es un país democrático descentralizado, y tiene una Constitución comparable a los países más avanzados y democráticos del mundo durante los últimos 40 años. La cual fue aprobada en referéndum por una mayoría aplastante el 6 de diciembre de 1978. Cataluña es una de las 17 comunidades autónomas que ejerce sus derechos de voto democrático con normalidad. De hecho, en los últimos cinco años ha votado seis veces en convocatorias municipales, autonómicas, nacionales, europeas... Sin embargo, lo del 1 de octubre de 2017, no fue nada más que un movimiento estratégico para a continuación declarar unilateralmente la independencia del resto de España. También hubo otro referéndum ilegal, el 9 de noviembre de 2014, que no fue reprimido. Ni entonces, ni en ninguna elección, legal o ilegal, los separatistas catalanes tuvieron la mayoría de los votos. |

In this "election" or referendum the polls that were set up and the vote that was to take place was done illegally, against any legal protocol and against the constitution of Spain. The King of Spain in his speech (below) called it undemocratic, which is the feeling of the other regions both inside and outside of Catalonia.
I, like so many others found it very disturbing to see police storming the polls and using rubber bullets violently against the people. But, it wasn't an innocent people's vote. What it really seemed to be was the separatist and European antigovernment movements provoking a situation to create a scandal against Spain that could be publicized throughout the world in order to gain international support for their cause. They published photos that didn't match the the date. They said there were 900 wounded, but there were only two hospitalizations and one of them was for a heart attack. One woman said that they broke all of the bones on one hand, finger by finger, and then her bandaged hand was the other, etc. In Germany, in France, in Belgium, and in the USA... the police act much more harshly against those who break the law than in Spain.
En esta "votación" o referéndum todo fue ilegal, contra cualquier protocolo legal y contra la Constitución de España. El rey de España en su discurso (abajo) lo dijo con claridad y expresó el sentimiento de las otras regiones y de la mayoría de los ciudadanos de Cataluña.
Yo, como tantos otros, encontraba muy molesto ver a la policía asaltar las urnas y usar balas de goma contra la gente. Pero, no era un voto popular inocente. Lo que realmente ocurría es que los movimientos separatistas y antisistema europeos buscaban provocar esas situaciones para crear un escándalo contra España que pudiera ser divulgado en todo el mundo para obtener apoyo internacional para su causa. Publicaron fotografías que no correspondían a este momento, dijeron que había 900 heridos pero solo hubo dos hospitalizados y uno de ellos lo era por infarto, una mujer dijo que le rompieron los dedos de una mano uno a uno y luego la mano que se vendó fue la otra, etc. En Alemania, en Francia, en Bélgica, en Estados Unidos... la policía ha actuado con más dureza contra los antisistema que en España.

Just like a spoiled child in the middle of a tantrum and like that fisherman's wife who was never satisfied, they went too far. After all, imagine if every region made the same demands year after year to have more than the rest. We all know it's impossible to give every region more than every other region. And, just imagine if every region threatened to leave the Republic if it didn't get it's own way. Finally, at some point, it's too much, they've gone to far. Catalonia, too much said the Fish.
Al igual que un niño mimado en medio de una rabieta y como esa mujer del pescador que nunca estuvo satisfecha, fueron demasiado lejos. Después de todo, imagine si cada región hiciera las mismas exigencias año tras año para tener más que el resto. Todos sabemos que es imposible dar a cada región más que a cualquier otra región. E imagínese si cada región amenaza con independizarse si no lo consigue. Por último, en algún momento, es demasiado, han ido demasiado lejos. Cataluña, esto es demasiado, como dijo el Pez.Related:
