Inside a Traditional Casa Maragata

The Maragatería is part of the historical region of León, in the landlocked Northern Highlands of Spain. Its houses were adapted to life of the muleteer; an occupation that peaked in the  was built in the XVIII century and carried on until the arrival of the railroads and motorcars.

La Maragatería es una comarca de la histórica región de León, en el norte de la meseta interior española. Sus casas están adaptadas a la actividad de la arriería; actividad que tuvo su auge en el siglo XVIII y hasta la llegada del ferrocarril y el transporte motorizado por carretera.

You can drive to the small cluster of villages in the Maragatería as a tourist, walk the cobblestone paths, and admire the stone walls of the stone houses that keep everything behind them fiercely private, but after years you probably won't have ever explored the inside of a traditional Maragata house.

Puedes visitar cualquiera de los pueblos maragatos, como turista, recorrerlos en coche o pasear sus calles empedradas. Admirar sus fachadas de piedra a veces blasonadas. E ignorar todo lo que guardan en su interior. Estas casas no están pensadas para exponer sino para guardar, estas casas están orientadas al interior.

In fact, it's a very rare treat to ever visit the inside of a casa maragata and see behind the impressive wooden doors, really more like gates. It was the same for me, four years after coming to live in Astorga, I had still only seen the outside of the massive Maragata doors, seen them from the street, often painted green, but sometimes showing off in my favourite colour of blue.

De hecho es un regalo poder visitar una casa maragata y ver detrás de sus grandes puertas de madera. Fue lo mismo para mí. Cuatro años después de llegar a vivir en Astorga solamente había visto la parte exterior de las puertas maragatas, a menudo pintadas de verde y a veces de mi azul favorito.

Until this day. Slip into the large gate door, most formed to fit a rock arch, with me. Inside you'll  find yourself in an enormous rock entrance hall. It's lined with a couple of tables to leave heavy shoes, coats, packages, produce and the like, and to greet those weary from travel, as would be the merchants, muleteers in the day, who lived here.

Hasta este día. Cruza conmigo el umbral de la gran puerta construida para adaptarse al arco de piedra. Dentro te encontrarás en un enorme hall empedrado. Se alinean un par de mesas, sitio donde dejar el calzado de trabajo, abrigos, paquetes, productos del campo y tal, y para saludar a los cansados del viaje, como serían los comerciantes, los arrieros que vivían aquí.

The peaches are delicious, and are served later with herbal tea, coffee and local cookies.

Los melocotones eran deliciosos y nos los sirvieron más tarde con infusiones, café y pastas típicas. Te estarás preguntando, como yo, acerca de la persona que talló el corazón en la pared y en lo que estaría pensando.

Cada rincón tiene un tesoro.

And you walk forward until the long rock entry opens up into a large and even longer central patio or courtyard. The Maragata house was composed principally of this central patio, around which all the other rooms rotated. The older the house, the more important the owner.

Caminamos hacia adelante y más allá de esta entrada se abre un grand patio central. La Casa Maragata se organiza principalmente alrededor de este gran patio central en torno del cual giran todas las dependencias de la misma.

At the end of this courtyard, today divided into two in order to share the space between the inheritors, there is a storage area where our hosts showcase their family antiques. An authentic cultural museum.
Al final de este patio, hoy dividido en dos por efecto del reparto de la herencia, hay una estancia en la que nuestros amigos muestran sus antigüedades familiares. Un auténtico museo etnográfico.

Our friends have a garden on the side of their house that is a true haven and also the perfect spot to have friends over and host celebrations and parties.

Nuestros amigos disponen en un lateral de su casa de un jardín que es un auténtico remanso de paz y también lugar adecuado donde reciben a sus amigos y tienen lugar sus celebraciones y fiestas.

I admiringly get a close up of all the thriving rosebushes and floral display along the walls. Roses, I'm deciding, can't be grown happily on balconies like ours, but need to be planted in the ground with lot of space to spread out their roots.

Con admiración me acerco a los robustos rosales y su exhibición floral por las paredes. He entendido que los rosales no pueden crecer felizmente en pequeños balcones como los nuestros, sino plantados en la tierra con mucho espacio donde pueden extenderse las raíces.

We leave the garden, back through the side entrance and long courtyard and now curiously climb the short, sturdy staircase to the second level.

Salimos del jardín, otra vez por la entrada lateral y ahora con curiosidad subimos la escalera corta y firme al segundo piso de la casa.

From here we see out over the tiled roofs of a number of neighbouring Maragata estates the church's bell tower.
Desde aquí vemos por encima de los tejados el campanario de la iglesia.

In the walls you will find few o no windows to the outside, and inside the courtyard mules and wagons were guarded.

En las fachadas se ubicaban pocas o ninguna ventana al exterior, y en su patio interior se resguardaban las mulas y los carromatos.

A prayer room.

"Hay una clase de arrieros apenas conocidos por los viajeros europeos: los maragatos, cuyo centro se halla en San Román, cerca de Astorga. Al igual que los judíos y los gitanos, viven sólo entre su propia gente, conservando sus costumbres y vestidos primigenios, sin contraer matrimonio jamás fuera de su tribu. Tan errantes y nómadas como los beduinos, sus mulas sustituyen a los camellos. Su honradez y laboriosidad se han hecho proverbiales. Es una gente sosegada, grave, inexpresiva, práctica e industriosa. Sus tarifas son altas, pero las compensa la seguridad, pues se les podría confiar oro molido."

"There is a type of muleteer scarcely known to European travellers:  the Maragatos, whose center is located in San Román, close to Astorga. The same as the Jews and the Gypsies, they live only amongst their own people, preserving their customs and singular dress, without ever marrying outside of their tribe. As great as wanderers and nomads as the Bedouins, their mules substituting camels. Their honorable and hard-working character have become proverbial. They are a calm, serious, unexpressive, practical and industrious people . Their rates are high, but the safety is worth its weight in gold."

The Maragatos form a small ethnic and cultural community with distinctive customs and architecture. The Maragata women used to wear a striking regional dress that made them stand out when they travelled to other parts of Spain.

Los Maragatos forman una comunidad étnica y cultural con costumbres y arquitectura distintas.
Las mujeres Maragatas llevaban unos trajes regionales destacados que se notaban mucho cuando viajaban a otras partes de España.

Concha Espina wrote the book, the Maragata Sphinx (1914) that talks about these people.
