En Mi Bolsillo

You can kiss your family and friends good-bye and put miles between you, but at the same time you carry them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach, because you do not live in a world but a world lives in you.

We are greeted with snicker-doodles and homemade oat milk.

Then we have a toffee cupcake with with a little flag on top that says, 100% Pleasure, 0% Animal Suffering.  How great is that!  I love starting a meal with a sweet and joyful treat!
Next, there's rosti (a delicious type of potato latke) with chunky applesauce.
After that comes the Indian dish, dhal made with red lentils and apricots.

This veggie burger is made with beets. The vegannaise tartar sauce accompanying it is homemade and is as delicious as nutritious.

Enrique holds my raspberry banana ice-cream so I can take a picture, but not before Sombra gets a good sniff. Lucky for me Enrique is fast and she doesn't get a lick!

It's easy to make new friends in a charming place like this. There are comfortable spots all around the Cafeteria-Restaurant for visiting and reading.
Hasta el baño es un rincón agradable.
Even the bathroom is a pleasant niche.

I started this book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows when I was with one of my oldest friends, San Francisco Lisa, as Enrique and I fondly call her, and read a quarter of it at her house in English. It's a delight to pick it up now and finish it in Spanish. Author Melanie Joy explores the invisible system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat, so that we love some animals we call pets and eat others we call food without knowing why. She coins the word "Carnism" to describe that belief system that decides which animals we select to consume; an exploration of complex psychological and social mechanisms that shape our society and its diet for meat.

Facts don't cease to exist because they are ignored. - Aldous Huxley
Facts like the giant meat industry.  This animal industry is a sister of production at such an enormous scale that it butchers more than 10,000. million animals a year in the US. This is done invisibly, in slaughterhouses far from everything, in horrendous conditions and where access is prohibited to all, including news reporters or anyone else who has asked special permission to understand the process. We should after all know something about the food we eat, don't you think?

How to Crate Your Dog

1- Prepare the Crate
Decide on the kind of crate you want for your size of dog. Sombra asked for the biggest version so her pet could stretch his long legs during his hours of sleep and rest.  And, because her pet likes to watch everything around him, a wire frame was her kennel/crate of choice.

2- Introduce your Dog to the Crate
Keep the crate in a busy area, like our office/guest room, so your dog will associate the crate with being with his family, rather than being alone. Allow the crate to sit there for a little while before you ask your dog to go in.

3- Use Positive Reinforcement
Always talk to your dog in a happy tone of voice when talking about his crate. Say, "Look, this is you place!"  Drop little treats such as pieces of dog food in the crate at first and praise your dog every time he goes in. Make his going inside to get his treats a game. See how well it has worked here!

3- Utilice refuerzos positivos
4- Feed your Dog in the Crate
He will love something yummy to chew on in his crate, especially when you leave him alone there for longer periods of time.

5- Getting Your Dog Accustomed to Being Alone
Staying close by at first. Sombra is perfectly modeling how to relax nearby. Then, begin by leaving him for only ten minutes at a time, closing the door, and leaving him with a treat. Slowly, very slowly increment the time he spends in his crate until you can be away and he can stay in his special place for some hours at a time.

The crate was Sombra's best method for having a large dog in a small home with no yard. It was an excellent way to stop him from being nervous about being left alone and destroying items in the house, especially clothing and shoes. What a great system. We're so glad for the crate!

Downpour

Sudden release of thick clouds, heavy emotion
Tensions thunder across wild sky
Grief thick with blinding light.

Convulsive drops hit rooftop tiles,
Pound glass windows
Stream down my face,
Hit my heart, a physical ache.

Mother arms empty, a simple text,
Mint Julep, how to,  a continent away
I feel you, intense, just beyond my fingertips.

You're there. No, you're not.
Mirage in wet comforter, soaked by
Open window and broken-heart tears.

Quickly clouds lighten, black to grey to white
Move off in the distance, again a spread of blue breath.

Inhale, fresh after storm breezes whisper,
It's alright.

Things aren't how they begin, but rather how they end. - Spanish saying
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him and are clled according to His purpose for them. -Romans 8:28

One Year Younger and Living Passionately

Mom, today as we celebrate your birth, one of my all-time favorite authors popped up on TEDx to talk about aging, or better said, about living. Isabel Allende, is the author of the first book, De Amor y De Sombra, that caused me to clutch my youthful chest and sigh romantic sighs. After devouring Of Love and Shadows I vowed to practice Spanish ever more fervently and read, in Spanish, The House of the Spirits and Eva Luna and every other Allende book since. Love in Spanish sounded to me like an entirely other world. In a Berkeley Auditorium some years later I had the privilege of listening to her speak in person. Her talk then concentrated on literary style, specifically her own unique form of Magical Realism. But, it's this simple talk today, How To Live Passionately - No Matter Your Age, that has made me smile and nod the most, appreciating the journey.

Allende asks, “So what have I lost in the last decades? People, places and the boundless energy of my youth. I’m starting to lose independence and that scares me ...
But there is also much that I have gained. Freedom. I don’t have to prove anything anymore. I’m not stuck in the idea of who I am, or who I should be … I feel lighter. I do not carry grudges, ambition, vanity, or any of the deadly sins that aren’t even worth it. It’s great to let go—I should have started sooner.”

To the one who has said many of those same things to me, who has loved and mentored and infused so much wisdom into the lives of her children.  I love you endlessly.
Happy Birthday, Mom!
